6 Low Cost and FREE Summer Programs For Kids in the Denver Area

It's that time of year again.  The kids are finished with the school year and the start of summer is here.  How joyous it would be to have the summer off from work and just get to be a kid again, but I digress.  Most of us would like our kids to be active and doing things all summer long, but most of us also don't want to spend this month's mortgage on sending our kids to summer camp.  Here are 6 low cost and free summer programs in the Denver area.

1.) Avid4 Adventure

What: Outdoor activities for kids all ages including biking, climbing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and other recreational outdoor activities.  They offer single day "camps" and also week-long expeditions for the older kids.

Ages: Pre-k to 12th grade

Price: Low cost depending on the program chosen

2.) cityWILD

What: cityWILD engages in a bold effort to bring the typically exclusive world of outdoor experiential education to a broad, inclusive audience.  Programs promote themes of personal empowerment, leadership, and community participation while motivating participants to reach their full potential at school, at home, and in their communities.  cityWILD’s programs engage youth in experiential learning opportunities that boldly address issues of inequity in education, economic opportunity, and access to the outdoors.

Ages: Grades 6-12

3.) Scholars Unlimited 

What: Scholars Unlimited is an after-school and summer program for kids. The programs focus on academic success, career development, leadership, health, and recreation to help kids build a foundation for success. 

Ages: Pre-k to 12th grade

4.) Summer of Adventure

What: Summer of Adventure allows kids to register for the program at their local library where they will receive an Adventure Guide to record their activities, a free book and a finishing prize after all 12 activities are completed. Each participant will also be eligible for weekly drawings for family passes to cultural institutions and entertainment centers at all branch locations.

Ages: Pre-k to 12th grade

5.) Summer Meal Program

What: Free meal program offered during summer months that provides nutritious meals to all children at no charge, regardless of income, race or religion.

Ages: 1–18 years of age (Adults can purchase a meal for the minimal charge of $3.00)

6.) Women's Wilderness Girls Programs

What: Designed to help girls build courage, confidence, and leadership skills that will propel them to reach their highest potential. 

Ages: 8-18

Price: Low cost depending on the program.  Financial aid is available for all programs.
