For most people, Memorial Day is about gathering with friends and family outside and enjoying the weather. It marks the start of summer and what better way to bring in a new season than to grill up some food, crack open some drinks, and bask in the sun. Sure you may not have a pool with a waterfall or an outdoor kitchen and bar, but your backyard can come to life with a little bit of imagination and hard work. Here are 4 simple tips for creating your own unique backyard that is perfect for you.
1.) Envision Your Perfect Backyard
The first step is to decide what you want out of your backyard space. Think about what is missing from your backyard and what you want to accomplish. Decide what you enjoy doing in your backyard and how you can enhance your space to better suit your needs. Do you want to create an awesome hangout spot to socialize and spend time with friends and family? Or would you prefer a more comfortable shady backyard that is perfect for grabbing a book and relaxing? The choice is yours, but make sure to decide what direction you would like to go before moving on.
2.) Use The Art of Hardscaping
Hardscaping is adding structure or privacy to your backyard by means of solid man-made materials. Stone pathways, decks, gazebos, stained concrete patios are all examples of hardscaping. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, hardscaping is your way of personalizing your backyard with your own unique style. No matter what size backyard you have, hardscaping is a great way to add depth and make your space not as boring.
3.) Think Outside of The Box
Don't follow the "rules" of conventional backyard layouts. Have some fun, your backyard can be anything you want it to be. Is exercise a big part of your life? Create a whole outdoor gym in your backyard. Is your house the place to be on the weekends? Find some comfortable deep chairs and add some unique lighting. You can get as crazy as you want, it is your property after all.
4.) Cover an Area of The Backyard
Weather can really put a damper on your outdoor plans sometimes. Create a covered area in your backyard that is protected from mother nature. A covered area can extend the life of any outdoor furniture you have, save you money by shading your windows or deck in the summertime, and increase the amount of time you can use your backyard because the weather is no longer in control. Covered areas can be as simple as adding a huge umbrella or as high end as building a gazebo.
So get out there and start creating your perfect backyard!
